As CCGs look for innovative ways to transform care delivery to improve health outcomes, patient experience and system sustainability, many are turning to models of commissioning that contract for specific outcomes across a care pathway or population. These ‘Prime Contractor’ models provide innovative support with a degree of flexibility and a chance to innovate in exchange for defined budgets and quality targets, including patient and carer satisfaction. Prime contractor models provide commissioners and clinicians with an unprecedented opportunity to design services and pathways around patients and their needs closer to the communities where they live.
Whilst relatively new, opportunities have been emerging in services including:
- Community and Acute Services for frail elderly populations
- Mental health
- Elective-specific pathways such as dermatology, musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions, cardiology and Ear Nose & Throat (ENT)
